It was located in the city of Antioch on the northern coast of Syria. It was the first Gentile church, and some noted leaders in early Christianity were among its members. Luke tells us something about its special character and ministry: "There were prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch: Barnabas......Simeon.....Lucius....Manaen and Saul. While they were praying, fasting and worshipping the Lord, the Holy Spirit: 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' After they fasted and prayed, they laid hands on them and sent them away." (Acts 13:1-3).
What can we learn from theses three verses?
- They were a people of the Word
- They were a people of Worship
- They were a people who knew the discipline of Fasting
- They were a people who heard and obeyed the voice of the Spirit
- They were a people of prayer
- They were a people committed to their Missionaries
