Hindrances To Hearing The Voice Of God

Why are we not hearing the voice of God today?  Perhaps you may want to examine the following points about hindrances to hearing God's voice:

Hardness of Heart

"Today if you want to hear his voice, do not harden your hearts" (Heb 4:7)

Unforgiveness

I encourage you to fast and pray often and to expect the Holy Spirit to reveal what are the hindrances to our coming to the throne of God.  Are there any unforgiveness in our lives? Unforgiveness will block us from hearing the voice of God.  Forgive and you will be forgiven.  When you do that, the Lord will heal you, and your heart will be softened.  When you have the tender heart, the Lord will speak to you again.

Disobedience

"So faith comes by hearing the word of God" (Rom 10:17)  Faith can be defined as "Obedient action to what God says".  To hear God's voice doesn't mean just to hear with your ears only, it means to respond to what He said.

Pride

A great hindrance to our obedience to God is Pride.  Many of us have held back from doing what God is saying to us because we fear what others will think of us if we obey the Lord.  "The fear of man bringeth a snare" (Prov 29:25).  Simply put, we don't do what God wants us to do because of pride.

Is God Speaking Today?

Is God still speaking today? Is it possible to hear the voice of God?  Many are confused over this issue.

Some believe that God reveals or speaks to us through the Bible, others believe that God can lead and guide us.  I believe that God still speaks to us today through His Holy Spirit.

Jesus said " Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matt 4:4).  That means that something happened in the past is happening in the present as well as in the future.

Perhaps there are some hindrances to our hearing God's voice:

Hearts not perfect before God

"For the eyes of the Lord search back and forth across the whole earth, looking for people whose hearts are perfect toward him, so that he can show his great power in helping them" (2 Chr 16:9).

  • worldly affections - if are affections are set on things on the earth rather than on things in Heaven (1 jn 2:15).  The Bible tells us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength (Matt 22:37)
  • impure motives - motives are impure just like prophet Baalam (Num 23).  Baalam bartered God-given miraculous gifts for money, fame and prestige.
  • wrong intentions - Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5) were pretending to give all the money to the work of the Lord, but were really keeping back much of it for themselves.  Their intent was wrong and God killed them.

Train Others To Help

"I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me, And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee"  (Num 11:14,15).

Moses was asking God to kill him because of the problems resulting from clericalism.  Clericalism was killing Moses.

In Exodus 18, Jethro (Moses' father-in-law) was also talking about the same issue.  The solution to this problem was to train others.

"And the Lord said to Moses, gather unto me seventy men...whom thou knowest to be elders of the people and officers over them.."(Num 11:16)

"In addition, choose out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of ten;  and let them judge the people at all seasons:.....(Exo 18:21-22).

The leader's job is to train and equip the members of the church who have leadership potential.

Wait On The Lord

God's choice of a person is not based on how clever, talented or educated he may be.  The Bible says, " I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent" (1 Cor 1:19).

The Apostle Pauls says, "The foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.  For ye see your calling, brethen, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.  "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And things which are despised hath God chosen, yea and things which are not to bring to nought things that are (1 Cor 1:25-28).

The Second Coming Of Jesus Christ

Jesus spoke about his own return

" At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and the nation of the earth will mourn.  They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory" (Matt 24: 30).

Angel Foretold It

"They were looking intently into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why do you stand there looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:10,11)

The Early Christian Encouraged One Another With It

"For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God and the dead in Chirst will rise first.  After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.....(1 Ths 4:16-18).

The Holy Spirit Bears Witness Of It

"But be patient, my brothers, as you wait for the Lord to come.  Look at the farmer quietly waiting for his precious harvest.  See how he has to possess his soul in patience till the land has had the early and late rains.  So must you be patient, resting your hearts on the ultimate certainty.  The Lord's coming is very near" (Jas 5:7.8)

Jesus will return unexpectedly:
  • like the lightning (Matt 24:27)
  • in the same wak that he has left (Acts 1:10,11)
  • with great power and glory (Luke 21:27)
  • in full view of all (Rev 1:7)
