Working Your Way Up To Heaven

Men and women groping in darkness trying to win their way to Heaven by doing penance, by locking themselves up in dungeons and inflicting unnameable tortures upon themselves and upon one another.  Blind and ignorant, they tried by some work or deed to pay the debt that had already been paid on Calvary's rugged cross.  They had lost sight utterly of the fact:

"Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe,
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow."

They forgot Him who promised, "....though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool" (Isa 1:18).

But God looking ahead into the future, spoke through the prophet Joel, saying:

"I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you" (Joel 2:25).
